Womens Design Service is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. The organisation was incorporated in 1987 with the following objects:-
  1. to promote good standards of architecture and planning with
    particular reference to women especially women from ethnic minorities and women with disabilities
  2. to advance education through the provision of information and/or advice to women relating to architecture, associated design services and the built environment
  3. to undertake research into the above areas and to make public the useful results of any such research.
Over the years Womens Design Service has been at the forefront of many issues relating to women and the urban environment and has produced a number of publications based on action research. Issues include:-
    • women and regeneration
    • women with disabilities
    • older women and housing
    • accessible offices
    • provision for small children
    • women and safety
    • tenant participation
    • public conveniences


WDS welcomes women who are interested in becoming members of our organisation. Any women who subscribe to our aims and objectives and can commit to the values of the organisation is welcome to become a member.

Membership runs annually from January to December and costs £5 for waged, and £1 for unwaged. Please make cheques payable to Women's Design Service.

As well as being entitled to attend and vote at AGMs, members get discounts on WDS publications and are forwarded information about events of interest. We are currently developing a Members Only area for this website which will have discussion boards and improved access to a range of materials and information.
