January 2012 - Women’s Design Service is in a state of dormancy whilst Trustees look at options for the future as well as the possibility of winding up the organisation.
Therefore we are, regrettably, unable to maintain this website or respond to queries in the way that we would like, but hope that the information and resources contained herein provide a legacy to the work of WDS up to 2012.
Is allocating space equally for men’s & women’s toilets fair given the physiological differences between the genders? We think it can mean that women are disadvantaged. Gendersite.org aims to raise awareness of the sorts of issues which effect men & women differently within the built environment by bringing together all the resources available on the subject.
WDS was established in 1987, its mission based on the belief that the diverse communities of women who live in towns and cities should enjoy a quality environment that is well designed, accessible, environmentally sustainable, affordable and safe. To that end WDS sought to work with women to improve the urban environment, as well as with statutory, voluntary and academic organisations to incorporate women’s needs into the design of buildings, transport systems and open spaces.
